Structural Collapse Awareness for ASAR Teams (16 hrs)

The structural collapse awareness course prepares ASAR Team Members and teams for operations upon arrival at a structural collapse disaster incident. It is important that rescue personnel can identify hazards they may face and how to mitigate those hazards and/or work safely around the hazards they cannot mitigate. Lessons learned will include initial scene size-up, how to establish search and rescue priorities and to begin operations following a natural disaster.  Whether the disaster is caused by Hurricane, Tornado, Earthquake, Tsunami or Flooding incident, the after affects are similar and so are the immediate actions required by first responders. Students will learn scene size-up and response considerations, scene operations, shoring techniques and considerations, and search, rescue and extraction.

Attendees will also learn Search, Victim and Structural markings; this knowledge will allow for safety of all personnel and enhance the ability to make rescues following natural disasters.  Students will also learn search techniques to provide rapid and safe clearing of areas and reduce duplication of efforts. Attendees will learn to integrate into the Incident Management System from the early stages of the incident through a multi-operational period event.  In this course, students will build shores in a variety of different situations and locations throughout the class.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to perform safe search operations at a structural collapse incident. They will understand all markings in disaster rescue, search priorities, search assignments and how to build shores to advance their search and build shoring for area of safe refuge during prolonged operations within a structure.

Objectives

  1. Understand victim, search and structural markings to ensure safety of first responders and the victims. 
  2. Understand how to integrate into the IMS from earliest stages of the incident through a multi-operational period event. 
  3. Organization of victim searches, search techniques and how to prevent duplication of search efforts. 
  4. Understand how important first actions can ensure success of the event. 
  5. Understand how to prepare for a natural disaster response before it happens. 
  6. Understand the importance of knowing surrounding agencies/departments and their rescue capabilities. 
  7. Learn from experienced US&R member on mistakes that have ben made in past, and how to avoid or overcome them. 
  8. Understand how important it is to find out capabilities of public works and how to integrate them into the rescue. 

Course Requirements

Course Length

This course is designed to be completed in16 hours. However, larger classes may need additional time to complete necessary skills.

Course Size

This course can accommodate up to18 students. Arrangements can be made for larger delivery options on a case by case setting.

Course Location

This course can be delivered at any department that has a classroom with AV capabilities. A demo area where shores can be installed inside a structure is required as well.

Student Needs

Students must have gloves, helmets and eye protection to conduct the class.

Course Adaptation

This course can be altered to accommodate more personnel, or fit alternate time requirements.

Attendees will learn the basics of levers and utilizing materials on hand to assist with extrication of victims.
