Animal Rescue Boat Operations Training
ASAR Boat Operations - Large Animal Specialist is an advanced 8-hour training course designed to focus on challenges experienced with moving large animals in both slack water and moving water. **This training is only available to USAR and Task Force teams; or personnel that have completed the ASAR Floodwater/Boat Operations training. This is an advanced course and requires skilled boat operators for participation. This training is provided through both hands-on and classroom instruction.
*This class can be combined with the ASAR Floodwater/Boat Operations to be a 4-day combo class.
*This class can be combined with both the ASAR Floodwater/Boat Operations and ASAR Swiftwater training to be a 5-day combo class.
*This animal rescue boat operations training class can be combined with the FEMA Animal Rescue Specialist training to be a 2-day class.
Course Topics
- Lecture - Introduction large animal behavior
- Large animal floodwater applications - discussion
- Rescue scenarios
- Boat operations in slack water and moving water
- Live animal handling – Optional but preferred
Participant Requirements
Have the ability to swim unassisted
Completed prerequisite ASAR Floodwater/Boat Operations course or other approved curriculum
Proficient in boat and motor operations
Class V rescue PFD with quick release strap
Water rescue helmet
Water draining footwear
Rope gloves (optional)
Whistle (optional)
Appropriate dress for weather
Sunscreen, bug spray
Requirements to Host This Training Course
Boats and outboard motors – 1 boat per 3 or 4 people preferred . Boats can be zodiac type of any size, aluminum boats should be at least 14’ in length. Outboard motors should be tiller mount motors (preferred)
Classroom (for the first morning only) with A/V equipment and speakers if possible, otherwise please notify the instructor prior to class
Outdoor working area should have access to restroom facilities if possible
Pop-up tents for shade, if needed, during outside practical (optional, but preferred)
